American Red Cross By: Katy Fedurek The mission of the Red Cross is to “prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors.” Today, the American Red Cross focuses on the fundamental principles of humanity, impartiality neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity, and universality. Just in 2016 alone, the Red Cross served around 4.1 million meals and snacks, gave out more than 2.1 relief items, provided 206,000 places for people to stay overnight, and gave out more than 144,000 health and mental health consultations. The American Red Cross would not be able to serve as many people as it does today if it wasn’t for Clara Barton.
