Evidence-based practice (EBP) is the conscientious use of evidence while caring for others and making decisions in the field of social work. EBP is currently not accepted by the community of social workers, but Professor Donald Forrester expresses a different opinion. He wrote a book arguing that EBP should be apart of every social work practice.
Forrester claims that the solution can be broken into three different parts. "Investment in developing an evidence base to tell us what works for social work. Commitment to using evidence-based ways of working. Focus on professional excellence in developing and delivering evidence-based approaches that recognize the time and skill required."
EBP in social work combines culture, researched based interventions, clinical experiences, and preferences to help social workers decide the services and treatment to help their clients reach their full potential.
I personally think that EBP should be integrated into the practice of social work. Social work is viewed as a practice just like any other field of health professions. In the older days when social work was just becoming a profession, EBP might not have worked due to all the progress that needed to be done. But with the evolution of social work today, considerable evidence is accessible. Also, this model of practice assures that the practitioner, researcher, and client work together to find the right treatment method to help clients succeed. This information is important in the field of social work because new methods are being discovered and put into action as the social work field continues to develop.
